What is THAI policy on carry-on allowance?

On flights operated by THAI Airways, passengers are allowed to carry in the cabin, without charge, a quantity of unchecked baggage – one baggage with the maximum size allowed 56 x 45 x 25 cm (22 x 18 x 10 in), considering handles, pockets and wheels. The maximum weight is 7 kg (15 lbs). Additionally, passengers can carry the following items free of charge:

  • Handbag, purse or notebook with a maximum size of 37.5 x 25 x 12.5 cm (15 x 10 x 5 in), or with the total dimension, considering the three measurements, not exceeding 75 cm (30 in). The maximum weight permitted is 1.5 kg (3.3 lbs).
  • Baby food.
  • Camera.
  • Cane, crutches.

What is THAI policy on checked baggage allowance?

On domestic flights, the baggage policy is defined by the Weight Concept, and the maximum weight of the free baggage allowance depends on the cabin the passenger is flying in, as follows:

• Royal Silk Class – 40 kg (88 lbs).

• Premium Economy Class – 30 kg (66 lbs).

• Economy Class – 30 kg (66 lbs).

Infant not occupying a seat – 10 kg (22 lbs).

ROP Silver Members – extra 10 kg (22 lbs).

ROP & Star Alliance Gold Members – extra 20 kg (44 lbs).

ROP Platinum Members – extra 30 kg (66 lbs).

On international flights, the baggage policy depends on the route and is defined as follows:

  • The Weight Concept applies on international flights within TC3 (Asia, Australia, New Zealand), between TC2 (Europe, Africa, Middle East) and TC3 (all flights except to/from the US and Canada). The maximum weight of the free baggage allowance depends on the cabin the passenger is flying in, as follows:

• Royal Silk Class – 40 kg (88 lbs).

• Premium Economy Class – 40 kg (88 lbs).

• Economy Class – 30 kg (66 lbs).

ROP & Star Alliance Gold Members – extra 20 kg (44 lbs).

  • The Piece Concept applies on flights to/from the US and Canada, and the free baggage allowance (a limited number of checked pieces with maximum weight and dimensions) depends on the cabin the passenger is flying in, as follows:
    • First (Royal First Class) – 2 pieces of maximum 32 kg (70 lbs) and 158 cm (62 in) each.
    • Business (Royal Silk Class) 2 pieces of maximum 32 kg (70 lbs) and 158 cm (62 in) each.
    • Economy Class2 pieces of maximum 23 kg (50 lbs) and 158 cm (62 in) each.
    • Infant not occupying a seat – 1 piece of maximum 23 kg (50 lbs) and 115 cm (45 in).
    • ROP Gold and Platinum Members – 1 extra piece in all classes.

International Flights Fees

Passengers are permitted to travel with checked baggage that exceeds the free baggage allowance, subject to the payment of an additional fee. The charges are calculated based on the extra weight or pieces and considering the specific origin and destination zones:

Online Excess Baggage Purchase

Extra Baggage Allowance may be purchased online. The online purchase of Extra Baggage Allowance is:

  • Non-refundable, non-endorsable, and non-transferable.
  • Available for THAI operated flights only when the Weight Concept applies, up to 24 hours before flight departure.
  • Not applicable for group bookings, standby passengers, and infants.
  • Applicable in 5 kg increments, up to 50 kg per passenger.
  • Allowed only one time per passenger and per sector.

Sports Equipment

Most sports equipment may be included in the free baggage allowance. Surfboards and windsurfing equipment may not be included in the free allowance baggage, except when traveling to/from Australia or New Zealand, or to/from Denpasar Bali (DPS) with a ticket is purchased from a point of sales in Japan.

For surfboards, windsurfing equipment and all sports equipment that exceeds the free baggage allowance, THAI applies Excess Charges for Special Baggage, as follows:

  • Domestic flights (entirely domestic routes) – the Excess Baggage Charge per kilo applies.
  • International flights (including domestic flights in connection with international flights when sports equipment is checked through to the final destination) – a Special Unit price (flat rate) applies as follows:
    • Wholly within TC3 and between Middle East Area and TC3 – USD 100 per unit of sports equipment.
    • Between TC2 and  TC3 – USD 150 per unit of sports equipment.
    • To/from the US and Canada – USD 150 per unit of sports equipment.
  • Surfboard and windsurfing equipment over 2 m in length – twice the Special Unit price.

Baggage Service

The airline is committed to making its best effort to return the delayed baggage in 24 hours. Passengers in this situation shall write a letter informing about a missing luggage to Thai Airlines, in order to start the baggage tracking. If the passenger incurred minor expenses because of this situation, Thai will compensate him or her, in order to do so the passenger should keep all invoices and receipts and write a letter to the airline asking for the refund. In case of lost baggage, Thai Airways will reimburse the correspondent amount to the passenger. Talking about baggage damage, the owner must notify the situation to the airline with a formal letter and claim for compensation regarding the specific harm. Passengers must do this within 7 days after receiving of the baggage.
