Voyager avec bébé China Southern Airlines

How old should be my baby to be allowed on a China Southern Airlines flight?

As far as your child’s safety is concerned, only infants older than two weeks are allowed to travel with China Southern Airlines. The carrier defines infants as babies aged between 0 and 2 years old on the day of scheduled departure.

When am I required to purchase a ticket for my child?

Infants travelling on lap are not required to occupy a seat and are eligible for an infant fare, meaning that their ticket will cost only 10% of the applicable adult fare of the same cabin class. You can take with yourself only one infant travelling under such conditions.

Any additional infant that you decide to bring with yourself must occupy a seat, and therefore a child ticket should be purchased for them. The advantage here is that a child occupying a seat benefits from a free baggage allowance equal to the one of an adult occupying a seat in the same travel class.

When travelling with infants, do not forget to take with you any documents that will attest your baby’s age, such as passport and / or birth certificate, because you will need them when buying child tickets.

Do I need any special items when travelling with my baby?

You are allowed to bring your own milk powder, but you will have to require the assistance of one of the flight crew members in order to prepare the formula for feeding your baby. If you have upon yourself any other infant food or necessities, you are permitted to carry them in the passenger cabin, but only after you’ve shown them and explained their purpose to the security inspection staff.

An adult accompanied by one infant without a seat can bring only one foldable stroller beside the free carry-on allowance. However, you are not allowed to use it on board, since baby bassinets can be provided by the airline.

Does China Southern Airlines offer discounts for infants and children?

First of all, infants younger than two years old who do not occupy a seat must pay an infant fare, which is set at 10% of the normal adult fare. These infants must travel accompanied by an adult and be seated on lap.

Secondly, infants younger than two years old occupying a seat pay the child fare.

Thirdly, children aged between 2 and 12 years old must occupy a seat accordingly, and also pay the child fare (for domestic flights – 50% of the normal applicable adult fare for the same class of travel). Unaccompanied children represent a special category, fees for them being calculated based on specific regulations.

Infant on Lap

An adult travelling with an infant younger than 2 years old can carry him or her on lap. Any additional infants brought along must occupy their own seats.

Baggage Allowance

Infants travelling with infant tickets benefit from a free baggage allowance of:

  • Domestic flights10 kg (22 lbs) + one foldable stroller free of charge.
  • International flights1 piece up to 10 kg (22 lbs) and 115 cm (45.27 in).

In addition, a baby carriage, bassinet, or a child safety seat may be transported free of charge. A non-foldable baby carriage can only be transported free of charge as checked baggage. A foldable stroller can be transported as checked baggage if the hand baggage limits are exceeded or in the case of insufficient storage space in the passenger cabin.

Infant Bassinets

China Southern Airlines offer bassinets for passengers with infants who are under one year old, who measure no more than 70 cm (27 in) and weight less than 11 kg (25 lbs). You can apply for a baby bassinet either directly when buying the ticket, or at least 24 hours before scheduled departure, at any China Southern ticketing office.

The bassinet service is available on Airbus A330-200, Airbus A330-300, Airbus A380, Boeing B777 300ER, Boeing B777A, Boeing B777B, Boeing B787 aircraft, provided the fact that it is an international flight, lasting longer than three hours. Of course, your infant should not occupy a seat in order to be eligible for the bassinet service. Unfortunately, domestic flights do not accept onboard baby cradle application.

Infants Travelling in Their Own Seat

If you decide to bring with yourself on your journey more than one infant, the additional infants must occupy their own seats, and therefore pay for child tickets instead of infant ones.

The free baggage allowance for infants possessing child tickets is identical with the one that adults travelling on the same class have.
