Qantas Airways flying with pets

What is Qantas’ policy on pet acceptance?

On both domestic and international flights, Qantas accepts pets only shipped separately as freight. Only Service Dogs are allowed to travel in the passenger cabin.

To comply with the latest safety measures recommended by health authorities, Qantas temporarily amended its pet booking, lodgement, and collection process. From August 19, 2020, all pet bookings must be made through a Qantas Freight-approved pet travel specialist.

The carriage of any live animals on a Qantas aircraft must comply with the current edition of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Live Animal Regulations. Handling recommendations, labeling, documentation, and the animal containers requirements are specified in these regulations.

Are there any quarantine regulations based on destination?

For Western Australia, Tasmania, Lord Howe Island, Norfolk Island, Thursday Island, and international destinations quarantine regulations apply. For more information, you can contact Qantas Contact Centres, other freight offices, or the applicable state or country quarantine office.

When making a pet booking, you as the ‘shipper’ are responsible for completing all necessary documentation required for the country of destination, as well as all local Australian Quarantine regulations.

Traveling on the same Qantas flight as your pet

Following the temporary changes to Qantas’ pet travel policy, if you wish to travel on the same Qantas flight as your pet, you will need to talk to your pet travel specialist about your options.

Service Dogs

Qantas accepts Service Dogs in the passenger cabin free of charge, on all domestic and international flights to Chile, China, Hong Kong, Johannesburg, New Zealand, Singapore, Tokyo (Narita/Haneda), the US and the UK (Pet Travel Scheme). Qantas defines Service Dogs as dogs that have been trained to assist a person with a disability and classify them as Guide Dogs, Hearing Dogs, or Assistance Dogs.

A Guide Dog or Hearing Dog trained by an Australian or Foreign Approved Training Organisation has “standing approval” to travel in the aircraft cabin. Guide Dogs and Hearing Dogs that have not been trained by an Approved Training Organisation, as well as all Assistance Dogs, must be approved by Qantas for carriage in the cabin. You must provide Qantas with advance notice of your intended travel (at least 14 days advance notice for all travel other than to/from the US; at least 7 days advance notice for travel to/from the US).

There are weight and length restrictions for the carriage of Service Dogs in the aircraft cabin. The Service Dog must not exceed 45 kg and 129 cm in length or any applicable length limit for a particular aircraft cabin (e.g., some restrictions may apply in premium cabins, subject to aircraft type and configuration). In Economy, additional travel conditions may apply if your Service Dog exceeds 86 cm in length.

For international travel, Service Dogs are subject to entry permits and in some cases quarantine regulations. For travel to the UK, Qantas accepts the carriage of Service Dogs via Perth or Singapore. Only when entering the UK, a collapsible crate is required for use in the unlikely event of a diversion (Defra requirement). The crate may be carried in the aircraft cabin free of charge on Qantas flights to and from the UK.
