Porter Airlines minors flying alone

Are children permitted to travel alone on Porter Airlines flights?

On Porter Airlines flights, up to the age of 12 years, children are accepted when accompanied on the same flight by a passenger who is over 16 years of age. On request, Porter Airlines offers the Unaccompanied Minor Service when children aged under 12 years travel alone, providing the best of care and ensuring a safe and fun flight from departure to arrival.

What is the minimum required age for children to travel as Unaccompanied Minors?

Under 8 years of age, unaccompanied children are not accepted under any conditions.

From 8 to 11 years of age, inclusively, a child traveling unaccompanied by a parent or guardian must fly as an Unaccompanied Minor.

From 12 to 17 years of age, inclusively, children may travel unaccompanied without restrictions, as adult passengers, but there is also the option for parents to book them as Unaccompanied Minors.

Unaccompanied Minor Service

Unaccompanied Minor bookings cannot be made online, but only through the Call Centre. Porter Airlines accepts a maximum of 4 Unaccompanied Minors per flight. To ensure availability, Porter Airlines recommends booking with a minimum of 72 hours in advance. Bookings for Unaccompanied Minors will only be accepted for nonstop flights operated by Porter Airlines.

In the following situations, Porter Airlines cannot provide the Unaccompanied Minor Service:

  • If the itinerary involves a direct flight with stopover, connecting flights or interlining flights.
  • Under extreme weather conditions that may cause the flight to bypass or terminate short of the Unaccompanied Minor’s destination.
  • If 4 Unaccompanied Minors are already booked on that flight.
  • If the child is blind, deaf or has severe allergies requiring them to travel with an epinephrine auto injector.
  • During labor disruption.

At least 90 minutes prior to departure, the child, accompanied by a parent or responsible adult, must arrive at the airport. This allows enough time for completing all paperwork (Unaccompanied Minor Form, Passenger Escort Gate Pass), verification of all identification requirements and check-in. On departure, the person accompanying the child must show one piece of government-issued photo identification and complete the Unaccompanied Minor Form with the required information: name, age, date of birth and flight number of the child, and personal information (name, address and phone numbers) of the adult releasing/receiving the child.

At most airports, you are allowed to escort your child to the gate area, provided you have valid government-issued photo identification available for presentation and a Passenger Escort Gate Pass has been issued to you. Only one adult is allowed to accompany the child into the departures area. You may also request a Porter agent to escort your child to the gate. Either way, you are required to remain in the gate area/airport until you are advised by a Porter agent that the aircraft has departed. Until the aircraft arrives and your child is transferred to the receiving adult/guardian at their destination, you are also required to be available via phone.

Unaccompanied Minors will be pre-boarded and will be the last to deplane on arrival.

At least 30 minutes prior to the scheduled time of arrival, the adult receiving the child must be at the airport. You should know that, for international flights, Customs will not issue a Passenger Escort Gate Pass for arrivals. Your child should be met by the receiving adult at the “meet and greet” arrivals area of the airport terminal. At Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, the adult must receive the minor in the main terminal on the island (to reach this location, it is necessary to take the ferry). Prior to releasing custody of an Unaccompanied Minor, the Porter agent must obtain positive identification and signature of the adult receiving the child.

Fee

Porter Airlines provides the Unaccompanied Minor Service for a fee of $100 CAD/USD per child, per direction, plus taxes.
