EVA Air flying with pets

What is Eva Air’s policy on pet acceptance?

The accompanied pets, like dogs, cats, and rabbits can be transported on EVA Air’s aircraft but only as checked baggage in the cargo compartment. EVA Air has suspended the transportation of live birds. Also, EVA Air terminated its service to accept pets as unchecked baggage in the cabin, except for Service Animals. All pets and Service Animals will be accepted only if the regulations of the countries of departure, transit, or entry permit it.

What are the general conditions for acceptance of pets on Eva Air flights?

Passengers traveling with pets are required to contact EVA Air Reservations before the departure date to confirm the conditions of transportation. Due to aircraft type limitations, pet travel is unaccepted on some flights.

EVA Air will not accept pregnant animals and animals younger than 10 weeks for carriage. The passenger will be responsible for providing valid health and vaccination certificates in addition to other documents that may be required by countries of departure, transit, or entry; if not, airport staff has the right to reject carriage of a pet if arrangements do not comply with EVA Air’s transportation standards, including the safety and health of the animal. Please allow extra time beyond the normal check-in time requirement.

Transport of snub-nosed dogs and cats (boxer, pug, bulldog, Pekingese, Himalayan, and Persian, etc.) in the hot season is not recommended because they have difficulty maintaining a normal body temperature in hot weather. As a result, brachycephalic dog/cat breeds and any “mix” of them will not be accepted for carriage from April 1st to Nov 31st at Northern Hemisphere points and from Oct 1st to Mar 31st at Southern Hemisphere points. However, carriage to/via/from Southeast Asia is prohibited throughout the whole year.

The following dangerous dog breeds, as well as their cross-breeds, are not accepted during the whole year: American Pit Bull (Terrier), American Staffordshire Terrier, Fila Brasileiros, Japanese Tosa, Pit Bull Terrier, and Dogo Argentino (Argentine Mastiff).

Other pet-related restrictions apply when traveling to certain countries with EVA Air:

  • To/from Australia: pets are prohibited to be carried to Australia as unchecked baggage in the cabin or checked baggage in the cargo compartment; they can only be carried from Australia. However, properly harnessed seeing-eye/hearing-aid dogs accompanying the vision or hearing-impaired passengers can be transported in the passenger cabin.
  • To the United Kingdom: pets and seeing-eye/hearing-aid dogs are prohibited to be carried as unchecked baggage in the cabin or checked baggage in the cargo compartment. They can only be carried from England as checked baggage in the cargo compartment. EVA AIR moved to Heathrow Airport T2 so passengers traveling with pets should be aware that they must check in at the counter 2.5 hours before time departure.
  • To Hong Kong: pets are prohibited to be carried as unchecked baggage in the cabin or checked baggage in the cargo compartment. They can only be carried from Hong Kong as unchecked baggage in the cabin or checked baggage in the cargo compartment. However, Service Dogs accompanying passengers with a disability can be transported in the passenger cabin on flights to/from Hong Kong.

Pets as Checked Baggage (AVIH)

Pets can be accepted only if they are being transported in containers that must be leak-proof, escape-proof, and claw-proof and constructed so that there is no risk of escape of the animal, its injury, or cause of damage to other items in the aircraft. Each pet in the cage must have enough space.

There is no weight restriction for pets transported as checked baggage with the exception of structural limitations on some aircraft. In the same kennel can be shipped no more than two animals of the same size aged at least 4 months if the total weight of pets and container does not exceed 14 kg (31 lbs).

By request, an agent at a transit point may check the pet to ensure an adequate supply of food and water on your behalf. On a trip involving more than one airline, pets cannot be through-checked to another carrier’s connecting flight unless a prior confirmation is obtained from the receiving carrier as to the carriage of such animal on the flight.

Fees

Pets and their kennel will be charged as excess baggage and excluded from the free baggage allowance:

  • If the maximum weight of the animal and container is less than 32 kg, the fee will be collected as twice the normal excess baggage fee per piece.
  • If the weight is over 32 kg, the fee will be four times the normal excess baggage fee per piece.
  • There is no oversize fee, but the cage dimensions cannot exceed 292 cm (115 in).

Service Animals

EVA Airways recognizes that many people with disabilities use Service Animals. EVA Air only accepts dogs as Service Animals. Service Animals such as escort dogs required by disabled passengers can be carried on board free of charge without weight limits. Service Dogs are dogs that are trained to assist passengers with disabilities with specific jobs or tasks.

Remember to be sure that you have all the required health certificates for the dog for your destination and any country of transit. Service dogs must be able to fit under the seat in front of the passenger or to lie at your feet without obstructing the row or the aisle.

Emotional support animals are not recognized as Service Animals, so Eva Air’s policy on pet acceptance shall be applied.
