What is Austrian Airlines policy on hand baggage?

Austrian Airlines’ rules regarding hand baggage grant a hand baggage allowance of one or two items of hand baggage, depending on the travel class, plus one smaller personal item.

What is Austrian Airlines policy on checked baggage?

According to Austrian Airlines baggage regulations, all fares include a free baggage allowance, except the Economy Light fare. However, the free baggage allowance to which is entitled a passenger is governed by the ‘baggage item concept’. This means that the passenger can check a concrete, specified number of baggage items free of charge as their baggage allowance, and this number is defined by the travel class. The travel class also sets the maximum weight allowed per piece, but no piece of baggage may exceed 32 kg.

Which policy applies for itineraries with connecting flights operated by another airline?

When you combine an Austrian Airlines flight with flights operated by another airline, the rules of the airline operating the longest or most significant part of the journey will apply for the entire itinerary, including for Austrian Airlines flights. However, according to US-DOT and CTA regulations, the baggage rules applicable to the entire journey are defined by the first carrier stated on your ticket.

You should check your free baggage allowance stated on your ticket or booking confirmation. The weight concept might also be applicable, in which case your free baggage allowance is based on the total baggage weight, with no restrictions for the number of pieces.

Hand Baggage

On Austrian Airlines flights, hand baggage allowances vary depending on the travel class:

  • Economy – 1 item weighing up to 8 kg (including myAustrian Holidays flights).
  • Business – 2 items up to 8 kg each (in exceptional cases, Austrian Airlines may reduce the hand baggage allowance for Business class passengers to only 1 piece of hand baggage).

Besides the weight limit, a single item of hand baggage may not exceed a maximum size of 55 x 40 x 23 cm. Compliance with these limits should be checked using the hand baggage gauge at the airport. Only a foldable garment bag, measuring more than permitted by the airline, but with maximum dimensions of 57 x 54 x 15 cm, is also regarded as hand baggage. Any item exceeding these limits must be checked.

Only one personal item (e.g. lady’s handbag, laptop bag, shoulder-strapped bag, briefcase) with a maximum size of 40 x 30 x 10 cm (16 x 12 x 4 in) may be taken into the passenger cabin, in addition to your hand baggage.
