What is the free carry-on allowance on Alaska Airlines flights?

On all Alaska Airlines flights, the free hand baggage allowance is one piece of carry-on (size restrictions apply) plus one personal item.

What is Alaska Airlines’ policy on checked baggage allowance?

When traveling on Alaska Airlines flights, there is no free checked baggage allowance, only exceptions to checked baggage charges. Alaska Airlines accepts checked baggage only upon payment of the applicable charges and within 4 hours of scheduled departure time (3 hours in Vancouver and 2 hours in Calgary). To avoid additional charges, each bag, including bags accepted free of charge, must weigh 50 lbs or less and have a maximum dimension of 62 linear inches (length + height + width). Exceptions may apply.

Which are the rules when checking baggage for codeshare or connecting flights?

Alaska Airlines may market a flight using its own flight number that is, in fact, operated by another carrier. When your travel involves multiple airlines (including codeshare flights), you must refer to your travel confirmation to determine which airline baggage policy applies. Different or additional fees may apply when your travel includes multiple airlines.

For connecting flights, checked baggage charges are assessed to the destination or first stopover of 12 hours or more on a single ticket. As an exception, passengers may follow the baggage allowance and weight restrictions of the international airline when traveling internationally and making a connection on a separate ticket to another airline within 12 hours of arriving in the connection city, provided a ticketing and baggage agreement is in place between Alaska Airlines and the other carrier.

When your itinerary includes a codeshare flight, the following baggage rules apply:

  • Codeshare flight operated by Qantas (AS5000-5499):
    • Carry-on – the Qantas carry-on rules apply.
    • Checked baggage:
      • Free baggage allowance – 2 bags of maximum 23 kg (50 lbs) and 62 linear inches (158 cm) each, and 106 linear inches (270 cm) total dimensions of the two free pieces.
      • USD 185 – each additional piece up to 23 kg (50 lbs) and 62 linear inches (158 cm).
      • USD 85 – each overweight piece from 23 kg (51 lbs) to 32 kg (70 lbs).
      • No single piece of checked baggage may exceed 70 lbs and/or 62 linear inches.
  • Codeshare flights operated by American Airlines (AS8001-8100):
    • Carry-on – the American Airlines carry-on rules apply.
    • Checked baggage:
      • Free baggage allowance – 1 bag of maximum 23 kg (50 lbs) and 62 linear inches (158 cm).
      • USD 100 – 2nd bag up to 23 kg (50 lbs) and 62 linear inches (158 cm).
      • USD 200 per piece – 3rd and additional bags up to 23 kg (50 lbs) and 62 linear inches (158 cm).
      • USD 100 – each overweight piece from 23 kg (51 lbs) to 32 kg (70 lbs).
      • USD 150 – each oversized piece from 63 to 126 linear inches.

Carry-on

Alaska Airlines accepts, free of charge, one carry-on bag measuring, including wheels and handles, up to 22″ x 14″ x 9″ (56 x 36 x 23 cm) plus one personal item, such as a purse, pet kennel, briefcase, musical instrument, or laptop computer. Every effort will be made to accommodate your carry-on in the passenger cabin, with at least one of the items stowed under the seat in front of you.

Carry-on baggage is accepted based on space availability on the aircraft at the time of boarding. Where adequate space is not available, your carry-on bag will be checked to baggage claim at your final destination, without any charge. However, items that exceed the carry-on allowance will be checked and charged $30 per piece.

On flights operated by Horizon Air or SkyWest (Bombardier CRJ700 and Bombardier Q400 aircraft), due to the smaller dimensions of overhead storage and space under the seats, larger carry-on items will be placed on a planeside cart before boarding. These items, specially tagged, will be returned to cart for retrieval at a designated area on the ramp or jetbridge within 5 minutes of deplaning. Fragile or high-value items should not be left on the planeside cart, but carried into the cabin with you.

Exceptions

No item may exceed the maximum dimensions, except the following items that may count as one carry-on bag as long as they can be safely stowed in a compartment in the cabin of the aircraft: fishing poles, delicate scientific equipment, small musical instruments, paintings, art/advertising portfolios, and human organs.

The following items qualify as exceptions to the carry-on limit when brought on board and will not count as a carry-on or personal item:

  • Umbrellas, coats, hats.
  • A pillow (personal use).
  • Food for consumption during flight.
  • Reading material (reasonable amount).
  • FAA-approved child/infant restraint seat to be occupied by a child (space guaranteed only with the purchase of a ticket for the infant), stroller (based on space availability).
  • Service Animals (properly documented).
  • Mobility/medical assistive devices (canes, crutches, wheelchairs, approved portable oxygen concentrators – POC, continuous positive airway pressure machines – CPAP, etc.).
  • Prescription medications and medical devices needed to administer them (e.g., syringes, auto-injections) as long as they comply with the safety, security, and hazardous materials rules and are stored in a bag containing nothing other than medical devices or medication.

Checked Baggage

To ensure that your checked bags are loaded onto your flight, Alaska Airlines only accepts checked bags within 4 hours of the scheduled departure (3 hours in Vancouver and 2 hours in Calgary) and up to the check-in cut-off time.

Self-Tag

Passengers can save time by using the option to tag their bags themselves, online or at a kiosk. Self-Tag Online is available during Web Check-in when traveling on domestic flights, except flights from Dillingham, Dutch Harbor, Glacier Bay/Gustavus, King Salmon, and Las Vegas. Upon arrival at the airport, passengers can go straight to the Bag Drop to collect their reusable bag-tag holders into which the bag tags printed at home will be inserted and drop their bags.

Special Self-Tag Kiosks are available at most airports so that you can print the bag tags yourself and then just drop off their bags at one of the Bag Drop areas. When you check in and pay applicable checked baggage fees at a Self-Tag Kiosk, self-sticking tags will be printed, along with your boarding pass. Just attach them and drop your bags at a Bag Drop area.

Size and Weight Restrictions

Any piece of checked baggage exceeding the following size and weight restrictions will be considered overweight and/or oversized baggage and will be charged accordingly:

  • 50 lbs in weight.
  • 62 linear inches in overall size (length + width + height).

Baggage that is overweight, oversized, or in excess (3rd checked bag and beyond) will not be accepted on flights to/from Guadalajara between November 15 and January 15. During peak travel periods, seasonal baggage limits apply and additional baggage may be accepted on a standby, space-available basis:

  • No more than 2 checked bags per passenger – to/from Barrow, Bethel, Cold Bay, Dillingham, King Salmon, Kodiak, Kotzebue, and Nome.
  • No more than 1 checked bag per person – to/from Billings, Bozeman, Kalispell, Sun Valley.

No single piece of checked baggage may exceed the following limits:

  • 100 lbs in weight.
  • 115 linear inches in overall size (length + width + height).

Checked Baggage Fees

Checked baggage charges may be paid online, at an airport kiosk or ticket counter. If a piece of checked baggage falls into more than one charge category (e.g. checked baggage, overweight and/or oversize), only the greater of the charges shall apply.

Alaska Airlines will charge the following checked baggage charges – standard fees for any bag that doesn’t exceed the size and weight restrictions:

  • $30 per bag – 1st checked bag.
  • $40 per bag – 2nd checked bag.
  • $100 per bag – 3rd checked bag and beyond.

Checked bags exceeding the size and weight restrictions will be charged $100 per overweight and/or oversized checked bag.

Exceptions

For all passengers, Alaska Airlines applies the following exceptions to checked baggage charges:

  • Strollers and car seats, when traveling with infants and/or children.
  • Assistive mobility devices and medical equipment for personal use.
  • One properly packaged box of pineapples when traveling within the US from Honolulu, Kona, Maui, or Kauai.

For active duty military U.S. personnel (with I.D.) and their dependents (with I.D. and travel orders), Alaska Airlines will waive checked baggage charges, including overweight and oversize fees, for 5 bags up to 70 lbs and 115 linear inches.

Also, certain passengers will be exempt from some checked baggage charges when traveling on Alaska Airlines flights as follows:

  • 1st checked bag fee waived:
    • Alaska Airlines Visa, Visa Business, and World Elite Mastercard cardholders (and up to 6 passengers traveling in the same reservation).
  • 1st and 2nd checked bag fees waived:
    • Club 49 members whose reservation contains at least one Alaskan city.
    • Passengers confirmed in First Class at the time of check-in.
    • MVP and MVP Gold Mileage Plan members (and companions traveling in the same reservation) and oneworld Sapphire members.
  • 1st, 2nd and 3rd checked bag fees waived:
    • Passengers whose entire ticket and itinerary are wholly within the state of Alaska.
    • MVP Gold 75K Mileage Plan and oneworld Emeralds members.

Sporting Equipment

Sporting equipment accepted as checked baggage must be properly packed in a soft- or hard-sided case designed specifically for the equipment. Kayaks are accepted only on Alaska Airlines flights 0001-1999  (glass kayaks are not accepted) and are subject to standard checked baggage fees, overweight fee, and oversize fee. For archery and bowling equipment, bicycles, boogie boards, fishing, golf, hockey, lacrosse, pole vaults, skateboards, skis, snowboards, scuba equipment, surfboards, paddleboards, and windsurfing  equipment, the oversize and/or overweight fee is waived.

Baggage Service

If you left an item at a gate or terminal area, you should contact that local airport Lost and Found department. If you left an item on board an aircraft, you should complete the Left Item report within 14 days of the loss. Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air will make every effort to find the item and, if an item matching your description is found, you will be contacted to verify that the item is yours and arrange for delivery.

Checked baggage should be available to you at baggage claim within 20 minutes of your flight’s arrival. Alaska Airlines will not be liable for baggage not claimed within 30 minutes after baggage has been made available for claiming in a public baggage claim area.

Any incident involving damage to or delay in the delivery of baggage or personal property accepted into the custody of Alaska Airlines must be reported in writing to an Alaska Airlines representative. You must report in-person and within 24 hours of arrival time any irregularity concerning baggage to the Alaska Airlines Baggage Service Office at your arrival airport. If you have already left the airport, you will need to call the Alaska Airlines Baggage Service Office at your arrival airport, within 24 hours of arrival for domestic flights and 7 days for international flights. It is important to retain copies of your ticket, baggage claim check, and receipts you may have accumulated for expenses incurred relating to your claim. If your bag has not been found after 5 days, and you filed a report at the airport of arrival, your report automatically transfers to the Central Baggage Service Office.
