LATAM Airlines Brasil flying with pets

What is LATAM Airlines Brasil policy on pet acceptance?

On LATAM Brasil flights, only cats and dogs may travel in the cabin (on select aircraft) or in the cargo hold. Only pets aged over 8 weeks, over 4 months if traveling to the United States, are accepted.

Pets are not accepted on flights to the following destinations: the UK, Galapagos Islands, Australia, New Zealand, Papeete and South Africa.

Brachycephalic (snub-nosed) cats and dogs may not be carried as baggage in the hold of the aircraft because they may suffer respiratory problems due to greater susceptibility to the effects of temperature and ventilation. Dog breeds that are considered dangerous (American Pit Bull Terrier, Brazilian Fila, Rottweiler, etc.) and sedated animals will not be carried in either the hold or the cabin of the plane, on any national or international LATAM Brasil flight.

Are there any requirements for pets to be accepted on LATAM Brasil flights?

To make a booking for your pet, you must contact a Sales Office or the Contact Center when you are making your reservation, before purchasing the ticket and up to 48 hours before your flight departure. If you have a connection with another airline, acceptance of the animal will depend on prior request and authorization from the airline when the pet is transported as checked baggage.

To transport your pet on a national flight, LATAM Airlines Brasil requires the following documents:

  • Rabies vaccination certificate: required for animals over 3 months old. This vaccination must be given between 30 days and 1 year prior to boarding. Young animals under 3 months old, which have consequently not yet had their first vaccination, will only be boarded with express authorization from a veterinary surgeon.
  • Health report: issued by a veterinary surgeon. The report will be valid for 10 days from the date of issue.

For international flights, documents will be requested according to the destination country and may include: International Veterinary Certificate, Health Certificate, Vaccination Certificate, Microchip/Tattoo, Serology Certificate, Certificate of Vaccination against Bacteria and Parasites.

Before boarding, you will have to fill out and sign a responsibility form regarding carriage of the animal. You must allow sufficient time when presenting yourself to the check-in desk with all the required documents.

Pets in the Cabin

Transportation of pets in the passenger cabin is only available on Airbus A319, A320, A321, A350 and Boeing B777 aircraft. The total weight of the pet and the container can not exceed 7 kg. You may only travel with one dog or one cat at a time, and the pet must travel inside a pet container that has the following maximum dimensions:

  • Hard-sided container – 36 x 33 x 19 cm.
  • Soft-sided container – 36 x 33 x 23 cm.

For a pet traveling in the passenger cabin, LATAM Brasil will charge the following fees:

  • Flights within Brazil – 200 Brazilian reals.
  • Flights within South America – USD 200.
  • Other international flights – USD 250.

In countries where they apply, sales taxes will be added to this charge. If your flight includes a stop that permits you to leave the airport, you must pay for the service again at each stop until your final destination.

Pets in the Hold

On all LATAM Airlines Brasil flights, the maximum size permitted for the kennel is 300 linear cm with maximum 115 cm height. On domestic flights, cats and dogs may be carried in the hold of the aircraft as long as the weight of the pet carrier with the animal inside is not over 45 kg. On international flights, the sum of the weight of the animal and the pet carrier may not exceed the maximum weight established for each destination:

  • Europe, Oceania, Argentina, Aruba – 32 kg.
  • All other destinations – 45 kg.

Fees

Carriage of pets as checked baggage is subject to the payment of the respective service fee and is charged as excess luggage to the final destination, even if you are traveling without any luggage. The following fees are charged per leg of the trip and vary according to the total weight of the animal plus their cage:

Assistance Animals

You can travel with an Assistance Animal on board, free of charge. You must inform LATAM Brasil that you are traveling with a Guide Dog or an Emotional Support Dog up to 48 hours before your flight departure through a Sales Office or the Contact Center.

Transportation of Guide Dogs is permitted on all routes except to the Galapagos Islands. Your dog must wear an official symbol that identifies it as a Guide Dog.

For transportation of Emotional Support Dogs on flights operated by LATAM Brasil or LATAM Paraguay, you must submit a medical certificate on the letterhead of a psychiatrist, psychologist, or Licensed Clinical Social Worker at the time of booking and when boarding. Health requirements of the destination and/or connecting flight countries apply.

The dog’s health documents must be up to date. Your dog must wear a leash or harness, and you should have a muzzle for your dog to wear on board if necessary. Your Guide Dog must travel at your feet or under the seat in front of you and must be obedient and behave well during the flight. If the dog is restless or aggressive, LATAM Brasil may offer the possibility of taking it into the hold of the aircraft.
