Are there restrictions for acceptance of infants on Korean Air flights?
Korean Air offers various services for passengers traveling with infants (babies under the age of two). The recommended infant age for traveling is one week or older. In case you need to travel with a younger infant you are required to:
- Submit a Medical Information Form (MEDIF) and confirm the feasibility of the baby’s travel beforehand.
- Request transportation for the infant (generally to the reservations personnel).
When is it required to reserve a seat for my baby?
Infants – babies under the age of two – traveling with an adult do not require a separate seat when traveling on the lap of the accompanying adult (does not occupy a seat).
If you are traveling with two infants it is required to purchase one child fare ticket to ensure the availability of at least one aircraft seat. Also, when you want your baby to enjoy the comfort and safety of his/her own seat (car seat) throughout the flight, instead of holding your infant on your lap and/or your arms, a seat must be reserved for the infant.
A separate seat is required for all children 2 years of age or older.
What infant amenities are offered on Korean Air flights?
Changing tables are available on all medium-long distance flights (baby diaper panels are installed in in-flight lavatories for diaper changes). To know the exact location of the in-flight lavatories, it is recommended to ask a flight attendant. For infants under 24 months, a special meal (baby food and orange juice) is provided upon request. The request is to be made to the reservation center at least 24 hours before the departure of your flight.
Infant on Lap
When you are traveling with an infant under the age of 2, you need to mention this when you make your own reservation. Infants who will not occupy a seat do not need their own reservation and may travel free of charge on Korean Air domestic flights. When traveling on international flights, Korean Air offers a discount when your baby is traveling on your lap; you receive a 90% fare reduction for your infant (you only pay 10% of the full fare).
Upon request and subject to availability, for the comfort of you and your infant, Korean Air can provide you with a bassinet (skycot). You can request a bassinet on international flights. Bassinets are designed for infants weighing less than 11 kg (24.25 lbs) and measuring less than 75 cm (2.46 feet) tall and limited in number. To check availability and submit your request, you must contact Korean Air reservation center of the nearest office, as soon as possible after booking your flight, but not later than 48 hours before the departure of your flight. If there is no bassinet available, the infant must travel on your lap.
Infants traveling on an adult’s lap have a special baggage allowance (in addition to the accompanying adult’s baggage) only on international flights, one piece that doesn’t exceed 115 cm (45 in, length + width + height) and 10 kg (22 lbs).
On all flights, you may check a stroller and a car seat or bassinet at no extra charge. A small foldable stroller, with the maximum dimension (when folded) of 100 x 20 x 20 cm (39 x 7 x 7 in) or less, may also be accepted in the cabin. Any larger stroller must be checked during the check-in process or at the boarding gate. You should know that some airports may have to deny access to strollers inside the boarding areas for security reasons. Remember to affix a label with your contact information (name, address, phone number and e-mail) if you are bringing a stroller on board.
You may also use on board an infant car seat; it is also subject to space availability. To ensure that there is space on the aircraft for your car seat, you must confirm with Korean Air before departure of your flight as it can only be used on an unoccupied seat.
Infants with Reserved Seats
It is mandatory to book a flight when the child is older than 2 years. It is acceptable to use a car seat in the cabin, but it may be refused if it is not suited for air travel. It is recommended to be internationally certified.
Baby Seat & Harness
On international flights to/from Incheon, you can request for a baby seat (except routes to/from China or Japan, and routes operated with B737 aircraft) and/or a harness at least 72 hours before departure through a Korean Air Service Center or your travel agency. The baby seat and baby/child harness are approved for in-flight use by FAA.
The baby seat is available for infants under the age of 2 who occupy a paid seat (child fare), weighing 9.1-29.4 kg (20-65 lbs) and with a height less than 124.5 cm (49 in).
The baby/child harness is recommended for infants using a baby seat and children under the age of 5, weighing 10-20 kg (22-44 lbs) and with a height less than 101.6 cm (40 in).
An infant with a reserved seat has the free baggage allowance that corresponds to his/her travel cabin. Still, a foldable stroller and a car seat or bassinet may be transported in the hold at no extra charge. Subject to space and availability, small foldable stroller may be accepted in the cabin (the same conditions as when travelling with an infant on your lap will apply).
Children between the ages of 2 and 5 years must be accompanied by a parent/legal guardian or an adult over 18 years of age. The child and accompanying passenger must travel in the same cabin otherwise the child will be considered an Unaccompanied Minor (UM).
Accompanied children (between 2 and 12 years of age) may receive fare reductions up to 25% of the accompanying adult’s fare.
A child’s baggage allowance (carry-on and checked baggage) corresponds to his/her travel cabin plus one fully collapsible stroller and a child car seat or bassinet (subject to availability).
For children between 2 and 11 years of age there are a number of meals available, which you need to order at least 24 hours before departure of your flight online or through a Korean Air reservation center. The following meals are available for the enjoyment of your child:
- Flights from Korea: Hamburger, Spaghetti, Fried rice with egg pancake or pork cutlet.
- Flights from Overseas: Hamburger, Spaghetti, Hot dog, Pizza.
