Island Air flying with pets

Are pets accepted on Island Air flights?

Pets confined in proper containers are accepted for transportation in the passenger cabin, as well as in the cargo compartment.

Which pets are accepted on Island Air flights?

Island Air accepts domestic dogs, cats, fish, and household birds. Gaming birds are not accepted under any circumstances.

In the passenger cabin, Island Air will carry small domestic dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, turtles and household birds, provided additional requirements for carriage in the passenger compartment of the aircraft are met. Animals not allowed in the cabin are as follows, but are not limited to: fish, reptiles, mice, rats and chickens.

What is Island Air’s policy on pet acceptance?

Island Air requires you to make advance arrangements for your pet’s travel. Also, you must assume full responsibility for complying with any laws and/or other governmental regulations of the state/territory to which you are traveling. Your pet must be harmless and odorless. Also, the pet must require no attention during transit. The pet must be transported in a leakproof container, subject to inspection and approval by Island Air before acceptance.

Island Air limits the number of containers to one container per passenger and the number of pets to one pet per container, except that 2 kittens/puppies (under 10 weeks of age) or household birds will be permitted in a single container. Pet containers will only be accepted subject to space availability. In order to ensure the safety and well being of any animal transported, Island Air will limit the number of containers on any flight.

Pets in Cabin

When traveling with your pet in the passenger cabin, the customer service agent is responsible for the acceptance of your pet. Birds, turtles, and guinea pigs require State Department of Agriculture inspection.

After checking-in, your pet must remain in the container at all times while in the boarding area and on board the aircraft. Your pet must be small enough to fit comfortably in a pet carrier that must fit within dimensions 20 x 14 x 8 inches, be escape-proof and have the inside lined with safe and non-toxic absorbent bedding. Island Air does not provide pet carriers.

An animal in its container transported in the passenger cabin will count toward the passenger’s cabin baggage allowance as a carry-on bag. The container must be stored under the seat directly in front of you. It is the flight attendant responsibility to ensure that the pet container is properly stowed, without blocking any person’s path to the main aisle, before the cabin door is closed and during taxi, take-off, and landing. Also, the flight attendant must ensure that the animal remains in the carrier at all times.

Restrictions

Unaccompanied Minors may not travel with pets. Pets are not accepted as cabin-seat baggage (i.e. not permitted to occupy a passenger seat). Passengers traveling with their pet in the cabin are not permitted to sit in an exit row (Rows 1 and 4).

Fee

The pet container is accepted as a carry-on bag and subject to an Additional Fare Collection:

  • Pet in Cabin fee – $35.

Pets as Checked Baggage

Pets that are too large or not accepted for transportation in the passenger cabin must be shipped in the cargo compartment on a space-available basis. For transportation in the cargo compartment, pet containers must be leakproof, properly ventilated and large enough for the pet to stand, sit and change positions comfortably. As animals must be accessible in case of emergency, pet containers must never be locked. Live fish must be enclosed in a flexible plastic inner container. The inner and outer containers must be sealed to prevent leakage.

The combined weight of the container and pet must not exceed 70 lbs (32 kg). If checking in a pet, there will be an additional fee collected depending on the weight of the container:

  • Up to 50 lbs – $35.
  • 51-70 lbs – $60.

Service Animals

Properly harnessed Service Animals may accompany a qualified individual with a disability in the passenger cabin at no additional charge. Animals used for emotional support or psychiatric service (comfort animals) are permitted to accompany the passenger in the cabin without charge, provided required documentation (not more than one year old) is presented.

Service Animals may not occupy a seat. Passengers traveling with Service Animals may occupy any seat, except a seat in the emergency exit row, unless the animal obstructs an aisle or other area that must remain unobstructed in order to facilitate an emergency evacuation. Where the Service Animal cannot be accommodated at the chosen seat location, as an alternative to having the animal travel in the cargo compartment, Island Air will offer the passenger the opportunity to move to a seat location where the animal can be accommodated.
