Malaysia Airlines flying with babies

Has Malaysia Airlines any restrictions for the acceptance of infants?

For safety reasons, air travel is not recommended for a newborn within the first eight days after birth. An infant or baby is a passenger who has not reached his or her second birthday at the commencement of the journey. Only one infant should be carried for one adult on board.

Does Malaysia Airlines offer discounts for infants and children?

The infant fare is 10% of the applicable adult fare and applies only to infants without a seat (the infant travels on the adult passenger’s lap). For an infant occupying a seat, the child fare will be charged.

On Malaysia Airlines flights, a child discount of up to 25% may or may not apply as per fare rules.

Baggage Allowance for Baby Essentials

When the infant’s ticket is purchased at the infant fare, Malaysia Airlines allows for an additional 10 kg (22 lbs) of checked baggage (except with the Economy Lite fare) over and above the free baggage allowance of the infant’s accompanying adult passenger.

The following infant personal items are allowed as hand baggage:

  • One baby bag with infant food for consumption on board and nappies with a maximum weight of 5 kg and a maximum dimension of 115 cm (45 inches)

                                                        OR

  • One infant carrycot

                                                      OR

  • One fully collapsible baby pushchair or stroller.

A fully collapsible baby stroller within the carry-on allowance (up to 7 kg and 115 cm) is allowed as hand baggage. Due to limited space in the aircraft cabin, acceptance of baby prams or strollers as cabin items will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Once the space is taken up, these items will be packed into the aircraft hold.

The combined weight of the infant carrycot, pushchair, or fully collapsible stroller and baby essentials must not exceed 10 kg. Remember that any adult items found packed together with these essentials will be removed and counted towards the passenger’s free baggage allowance.

Infant Amenities

A number of bassinets are provided onboard, depending on the aircraft, so passengers are not allowed to carry their own bassinets into the cabin. This service must be requested at least one day before the flight’s departure.

A limited quantity of baby formula, food, and essentials (including brushes, napkins, and bottles) are provided onboard to ensure the infant’s comfort throughout the journey. However, feeding mothers can carry their choice of infant formula due to the wide variety of formulas available in the market and the different preferences of infants. Facilities for sterilizing feeding bottles and heating baby food are also available on certain flights.

Baby Meals, commercially prepared baby food combined with vegetables or fruits,  for children up to 2 years old are offered on select flights only and must be ordered at least 24 hours before flight departure.

Traveling with Children

Families with infants and children are invited to board the aircraft first to allow parents more time to ensure that their kids are seated comfortably and stow away their luggage without having to worry about disturbing the other passengers.

When traveling on a flight with meal service, the Child’s Meal is nutritionally designed for children from 2 to 12 years old. The exact meal served depends on the flight sector. This service must be requested at least one day before the flight’s departure.

Children can enjoy a Child’s Play Room at selected airports with a television and DVD player, chairs, toys, kid-sized writing tables, comics, and coloring books.
